Malé City Council has passed a resolution granting permission for the sale of water to vessels from the fuel shed being developed in Vilimalé by Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM).
The decision was made unanimously by the councilors who attended the 10th Official General Meeting of the 5th Term of the Malé City Council, held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
Speaking on the matter, Malé City Mayor Adam Azim stated that he believes businesses in low demand areas such as Vilimalé can become viable only by providing additional services, such as supplying water alongside fuel.
The Mayor noted that, at a time when efforts are being made to strengthen state owned enterprises, support from the Council would provide a major benefit to these companies.
He stated that it would be much easier for residents to obtain fuel and water if both services were available at one location. He added that if speedboats operating on the southern side of Malé could obtain fuel and water from Vilimalé, they could be redirected to that area.
The Mayor further stated that this would also help reduce congestion at the Malé harbor.
Supporting the Mayor's remarks, Maafannu West constituency Councilor Mohamed Rizwan Ali stated that the Council must cooperate in any matter that improves the quality of service provided to the public. He described the decision as a very positive step.
Following the Council's decision to grant this permission, arrangements will be made to allow vessels to obtain water in addition to fuel from the Vilimalé fuel shed in the future.
This development is expected to provide significant relief to those engaged in maritime transport in the Villimalé area.
